Montclair has a magnet school system. That means that you don't have to go to your "neighborhood" school. Instead, any child in Montclair can go to any school in town (depending on space and availability). Each school has a magnet "theme" (global studies, environmental studies, Montessori, etc) which is threaded through the essentially same core curriculum. I'd be happy to send you more information about how it works if you'd like.... more
We have a fairly large ex-pat community here in Montclair and we are friends with 3 families with small children originally from Israel. Their kids have gone to Jewish pre-k, but public elementary. A popular private Jewish k-12 school in the area is Soloman Schecter in West Orange. I can put you in touch with our Israeli friends if you like. We are about 45 min to Manhattan via train / bus.... more
A great place to begin looking for information is the website www.montclair.k12.nj.us You missed "tour week", but you can still get a lot of information from the Board of Ed. Montclair is a magnet school system. You can choose which school is your first choice when you apply, but you will not always get your first choice. I have three children in the Montclair system and really believe that all the schools are really wonderful schools. Having said that, not every school is a great fit for every child. You must think about what kind of environement is best for your child and for you. They start at different times, offer different programs, use different educational philosophies and have different learning environments.
Some things to think about:
Is your child an early bird? Do you want them to walk to school? Would they do well in a Montessori setting? Is having a drama program important to you? How involved of a parent body do you feel comfortable with?
The schools all have different "vibes". See what works best for you and your child and go from there.

Montclair schools are very good, and very innovative. It is a stable community and beautiful as well. Most of the Bergen county and Essex county suburban schools sytems are very good. I have raised my 4 kids in Teaneck (2 now in college, 2 graduated and working), and found Teaneck's schools to be wonderful. I can name many other communities that would also serve your needs, depending on price range, style of house, proximity to NYC transportation, etc. Give me a call and let's work together!... more
