First, as Charles B, suggested, talk with the neighbors in the area to find out more about the lifestyles, neighbors and crime in the neighborhood. Most neighbors are more than willing to help you learn about their community, and they're eager and happy to help!
Second, as Roland pointed out, you can check almost ANY city and any neighborhood on crimereports.com. This site provides locations where crime took place as well as the incidents and some specifics pertaining to charges.

Crime statistics provide only part of the answer. I've known small neighborhoods where one bad family causes an outbreak in crime. Other very nice neighborhoods which have been very safe and residents aren't very careful about locking up, become targeted by criminals from other cities.
Spend some time there and understand what the residents feel. Something as simple as you may like an old classic car and a neighbor doesn't want "their" neighborhood filled with old junkers can turn an ideal neighborhood into just okay.

Hope this helps!
I have several clients who live in that neighborhood. My clients are very happy with the neighborhood. The prices are relatively low for a property in that neighborhood.
The best way for you to tell if this is a neighborhood that you would like, I recommend that you go out and knock on some doors in the neighborhood and ask the neighbors how they like that neighborhood. That is the best way to tell if this is a neighborhood that you would like.
