To start any business it takes a vision.
If you are thinking about starting a business - just for the sake of being your own boss - forget it. You have to have a passion for what you do or you wont get past the gate.
Take the passion and turn it over with sweat and some hard work and you will succeed in anything you do.
But on the technical aspect - don't go and incorporate yourself right off the bat.. wait for some good $$ to do that. Getting a DBA, obtaining a business license with your city, writing a business plan, canvasing your potential clientele, and finding your "niche" in the market you choose - are just a few examples of the preliminaries...
I always recommend working out of your home if you can - don't go for the cubby until you're sure y've got the stamina and the business potential for future growth.
Join your local Chamber of Commerce - get to know other business people in your area - they are a wealth of information and referral. It's a lot of foot work initially, but if you do it with gusto (and you can afford to wait for the profits) it won't seem like work - if you are doing something that brings the best of you out.
