I would be very careful in selecting a builder. I do not recommend going the owner-builder route. Most of the time you end up spending more by having a contractor come in and fix costly and time consuming mistakes. Do you have time to be at your job site 40 hours a week? Then don't be an owner builder.

You can build a nicely appionted home for around $200-$250 per foot on a level lot with our company. We also provide a warranty and service agreement you won't get elsewhere. Keep in mind you need to budget for city fees, school fees, permits ect. Uncle Sam gets his piece. Permits and fees are much lower for a major remodel than a ground up project.

Good afternoon Linda,

That's a great question. Like most areas, construciton costs are going to vary dramatically depending on the service provider and teh level of quality and finish. That said, as a broad range you'll be looking at $250/sf on the low end, all the way up to $600-700k/sf on the higher end in Montecito for the luxury estates. Most "affordable" cosntruction with reasonable quality will be in the $300-400/SF range.

I hope that helps Linda. Are you considering remodeling your home, or are you considering building a custom home? I'd be happy to assist you, as well as put you in touch with some local contractors with good reputations for quality and a range of prices.

Have a good afternoon.

Hello, I too am looking to build in Santa Barbara and what costs would be, how to find a reliable builder, what to look out for, problems that can be expected during the process and whether or not we would have to be/should be living in the area during the building process. We have available a 2+ acre lot in the Hope Ranch area but currently live in Florida.

Daniel Zia is accurate in his assessment of construction costs per square foot for Santa Barbara residences. As a designer, I am often front and center with the entire process from the beginning to end. As each decision made along the way drives the project's cost of construction incrementally, balancing the aesthetic requirements/aesthetic choices with the project's budgetary constraints needs to be handled with care and experience. Whether it's designing an interior, a custom piece of furniture, or an outdoor area with landscaping, there are thousands of decisions that need to be made along the way that will affect not only the project's bottom line, but also its timeline. If you have any additional questions, or would like an overview of the process, I'd be happy to help you. Have a great day. Best regards, Lori Hoffman. Today the national average cost per sq. ft. to build from scratch is $84.00 per sq, ft. Materital costs are relatively equal in all areas of the country, especially if you buy a large enough package of materials to build. So, thet leave us with a lage descrepency in builders charges in the SB area, Which is changeing rapidly. If you general contract yourself, you should be able to build quality construction ( not hight end but very nice) for $150.00 per foot. Anyone telling you different has been brainwashed by local contractors or just don'r knos what they are talking about.

The homes in Santa Barbara are not your average and I would have a hard time remodeling a home for that, even if I were buying at Home Depot in bulk. Your spelling is a little off there Stephan.

Linda

I don't think you can get much cheaper than $200/sqft these days within the Santa Barbara area. Most "normal construction" is in the $300-$450/ sq ft. and as Daniel said, you can go up to $700 and even $1000 per sqft here depending on your needs/choices.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

take care

Daniel makes a good point for a very general question. Prices can be extremely different depending on your choices.

Granite or laminate counters?

Sub Zero or Wal-Mart refrigerator?

Tile or vinyl floor?

Clay tile or comp shingle roof?

Casement, single hung or sliding windows?
