The reason my prop. tax increased is due to a fancy new house built this summer 10 ft. away from my house. They are assessing my house based upon what someone might buy that new house for re: taxes. I want to fight this it is wrong. How do I take the steps to do so? Thanxs

If you need comps still, or ever please call me at (208)309-2081, I am an agent with Windermere in Hailey. I have gone through the property tax appeal myself with my properties a few days ago and know all about it. If your appeal was not accepted with local office, the next step will be to appeal with the Idaho Tax Commission.

Tax assessor's are cashing in on property appreciation this year. It will be a tough fight, you will have to show that your property as well as surrounding properties don't appraise for what they are saying they are worth. If your home has been unfairly assessed for example your neighbors didn't go nearly as high you have a leg to stand on. From what I have seen of tax assessments this year they are hitting us in Idaho for almost what the houses are worth. Keep in mind that an appraisal will run you in the neighborhood of 300-500 dollars.

You will need to get comparable from the propert appraiser's office. It can be an uphill battle. Does your state have a program that limits the amount the taxes can be increased per year on your property? If yes, try applying for this. Also, ask if they have a certain amount that is shielded from taxes.

Contact the county property appraiser and ask about the review/appeal process.
