How hard is it to time a move?

We will be ready to move mid May '09. We need to sell in Florida before we can buy in Alabama. I am trying to get a timeline on the bidding process in order not to move twice by selling my house in Fl. before I am actually ready to make the move next spring. Any suggestions for how long the process usually takes, we've never moved state to state before.

The length of time it will take to sell your home in Florida is very difficult to predict. It will depend on your pricing and other factors. However, you appear to be asking a general time line. You can list the home now or later this fall to have a good chance to sell during the winter season, the most likely time to sell in Florida.

When you do list to sell the Florida home, you can do so with a planned extended closing time that allows you enough time to find your Alabama home. There are a number of buyers for Florida homes who will not object to a delayed closing because they are buying a retirement or second home.

Anyway, just talk to your Realtor about all of this. You will probably be able to work out a schedule that helps you accomplish your goals. Good luck.

Good luck
