Can anyone direct me toward great sites for gathering historical data?

Asked by Fred, San Francisco, CA Sun Dec 30, 2007

Hi all, I am interested in gathering a better understanding of SF markets, particularly the different neighborhoods and the trends over different periods of time. Any good resourse out there anyone could share with a real estate newbie? Thanks in advance, Fred

I should also add for longer cyclical history you might find that on California Association of Realtors site; in terms of property values I'm just looking at the last 3 months to analyze comparable sales to determine fair market value. San Francisco Association of Realtors has published reports of historical data -- zip me an email at and I will need to dig around in my files to send to you.

Kevin has some great resources -- I use Altos on my blog (but I have to fiddle a little to get the graphs working); I'd just add to that data quick, -- a firm in San Diego that offers some excellent free data (and more powerful data for dollars), and I've been checking out the heat maps here on trulia and they are awesome for neighborhood stats! For rental information Pat Kitano just turned me on to which is in beta and it's much better than The Chronicle publishes weekly sales data by county.

Hi Fred,

Obviously, realtors, like myself have access to MLS data for previous sales for SF neighborhoods. I'm a data junkie, so I like to look through various information on sales, days on market, etc. when researching for clients or myself. I'm also a big fan of which has some great data and trends. The Tax Collector and Treasurer's office on may also provide some information. I like AlstosResearch as well. Here's a link: Finally, Inman News is a good source, but may not be as micro as you'd like. Here's the link: Of course, I'd be happy to help if you'd like.

Best regards,
