The primary purpose of building permits is safety. When doing any kind of home improvement or renovation, you want to make sure things are done properly and to the current building safety code. Not all home improvement projects require permits and you can check with your local city or county municipality office to find out whether one is required for your project. If you are going to hire a licensed contractor, often times they will obtain the permit for you. Completing a project without a permit could cost you future fines and penalties. Also, if you sell or refinance your home without a permit, there is no record to verify if your renovation has added value to your property. Both potential buyers and their lenders will want proof that any changes or improvements to a property were completed properly and to all building safety codes. Best of luck!
