This is strange, but I'm answering my own question. A pleasant aroma makes an open house more inviting. I visited an open house last week. The sellers had cooked some kind of stew the night before. The house smelled like onions! Needless to say, I didn't even want to stay & look at the rest of the rooms.
I advise my clients to bake bread right before the open house (with a quickie frozen bread kit from the store). The house really smells like a home, not like a garbage can. People want to stay longer & leave the house feeling good about it.

I would suggest looking at craigslist. Most landlords are frugaland advertise in the most efficient manner.
Another method is to drive around an area that you like, and call on for rent signs.
For section 8 housing you might want to check with the city or county office that has jurisdiction for housing and neighborhood services.

Well - in vacant homes, at least in my area, it is suggested that the home be "winterized" - a plumber will drain the lines and turn off the water, so there is no chance of a frozen pipe anywhere!... more
