St Louis City has a good crime mapping service here http://www.slmpd.org/crime_mapping.html

Anna is correct in that broker's can't steer people, but making people aware of the resources provided is useful. I've lived in the Tower Grove area within 63116 for 3 years with my wife and 3 children. Like many other urban areas, its better in some areas than others. Overall its a really nice urban community.

Crime in South City is spotty block by block. I have friends who live in the nicer areas near Tower Grove that have been broken into. I would suggest to invest in a good alarm system, put up signs that you have an alarm system, get a dog and put bars on your basement windows. Be aware of your surroundings. Another good crime deterrent is to become friendly with your neighbors. Good neighbors will keep a watch on your home. They will be able to see when it is not you entering and leaving your home.

1 – Ask the local police/sheriffs department

Gather the street names closest to the home you and considering and ask them to check on the streets. They will in most cases tell you if many calls are made to the area.

2 - Megan's Law Database

Visit: http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov/

This site offers a search feature and will show the current location of known sex offenders.

3 – Online data

http://www.city-data.com is full of statistics and information.

http://www.propertymaps.com is another good site, which has crime statistics.

4 - Talk to neighbors

Talk to several people. Most people are friendly and will share everything they know. Nothing beats the insight of someone that has lived in the area for years.

5 – Visit the neighborhood at various times of the day and night.

What is the condition of the surrounding block or two? What condition are the houses? Are the front yards manicured and well cared for? Broken down cars, chain link fences, and pit bulls are not a good sign.

It is best to check with local crime stats in the area and to check with the local police department for detailed crime reports.

Since real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods, consider researching the area(s) online and for accurate and up to the minute information regarding crime, do contact/visit the local police department and ask all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand--then go from there.
