In addition to looking at statistics, I would suggest driving around the neighborhood at different times of the day and different days of the week to feel what it would feel like. Nothing beats personal experience.

I use homefacts.com, but that area has a huge variance from one part of the zip code to another, so put in a property address vs the entire zip code for most valid information as to crime and sex offenders. There are dropdown menus that separate violent crime from property crime, and also a list of sex offenders within a mile of a given address with pictures and addresses. You want to double check that info with the local authorities, but it's a pretty useful site.

They also give you the Seattle Average and the National Average per type of crime for comparison and analysis. They are not right on many things...like how close it is to a library, but their crime and sex offender info looks fairly accurate

I live in 98178 and it close to everything, from downtown Seattle, Southcenter Mall, and Lake Washington. I wouldn't mind find permanent housing here for the long run.

This is such a hot topic, but I believe you got some good places to do your own research already.

The city of Seattle offers pretty good stats on different neighborhoods in Seattle, broken down by type of crime.

I used to live in 98178, and the area I lived in was pretty good. I used to say that the crooks from worse areas would go to more affluent areas. ;-)

I have been a resident at this zip code for several years. It is one of the most overlooked, affordable VIEW and WATERFRONT address in the whole Seattle area. You can find great prices in neighborhood pockets that not only show pride of ownership but boast caring neighbors. I have helped many renters relocate here and they love the view, the convenience to Seattle as well as to the Eastside, the access to local award-winning eats, even groceries cost less in the area...The school system can use some improvement though.
As previous brokers mentioned, check with the city police depts. Hone down to a specific neighborhood and start enjoying getting the most for your money.
Note that many multi-generational homes are found in this area too. Do you have extended family who would like to be close by, yet live in separate independent quarters? Let me know if I can help.

Hi Karen,

Every city has an official web site and the url is ci.nameofcity.wa.us. For example, Bellevue would be http://www.ci.bellevue.wa.us . In my experience most of the official city websites have a link to crime statistics.

I have alos had success using Bing or Google by searching keywords: crime statistics in ________.

Good luck in your research.

Warm Regards,
Karen

After posting above, I tried the link (http://web5.seattle.gov/mnm/incidentresponse.aspx) and it did not work. Here's another link to main page: http://www.seattle.gov/spd/ , on the right of the screen click on "9-1-1 INCIDENT MAP". That will take you to the "My Neighborhood Map" page.

Good luck.

Karen, you can go to the "My Neighborhood Map" on the Seattle Police website at http://web5.seattle.gov/mnm/incidentresponse.aspx. There, you can input your address and learn about the crime rate in your neighborhood. (Note: Depending upon where you live in 98178, you may have to do more research on crime rates in the City of Renton or the City of Tukwila.)

Good luck.

You can check with the web site https://www.crimereports.com/ . I suggest you put in your current zip code as well, just so you can see the difference between your neighborhood and one you might be looking at.
