As far as investigating environmental issues, the local municipality will likely have on record any known issues. Most states require this information to be readily available. Crime statistics are also readibly available from municiple or state agencies. Start the web search. The next thing I would check is the availablilty of employment. If a local major employer closed, homeowners will soon feel the crunch and become desperate to sell, tumbling prices and making it a bad decision to buy in that area. A little time spent on research could save you from an expensive mistake. Good luck!

The easiest way to find out about a neighborhood is to drive around there. During your drive stop and talk to the residents of the neighborhood. They would most likey know if there are any problems with the homes, schools, crime, whatever in the area. If you see a mailperson or police officer speak with them as well.
Make sure you do your drive at different times of the day, a nice queit neighborhood during the day may look totally different in the evening when residents come home from work/school.
Also try doing a google search with the neighborhood, see what pops up.
Many police stations will carry crime stats about neighborhoods online, so try looking up the local police dept's website.

There are a couple of good ways to find out about the area. First, you could approach some of the homeowners that live there now and simply ask them if they enjoy living in the neighborhood. They will usually give you an honest answer. Then you could and should ask the local law enforcement agency in that area about the number of incidents that have been reported in that area. Hope this helps.
