A great resource for assessing local crime activity is the Automated Regional Justice Information System at http://www.arjis.org
is a great resource for investigating the types and levels of crime in a particular area. The San Diego Police Department first suggested I use the site when I was inquiring about possible crime in a particular beach neighborhood one of my clients was interested in. You will be able to look at broad statistics by area using http://crimestats.arjis.org.
The mapping tool at http://www.crimemapping.com
allows you to be a specific in your inquiry as to type in a street address, and lets you look at crime within, for example, up to a 2 mile radius around the address if you'd like. You are able to ascertain the types of crime (e.g. theft, drug and alcohol violations, burglary), and you can search within a range of dates (e.g. within the last month or year).
