1. Get a Police Report and look at the crime rate over a 2-5 mile Radius.
You couldn't pay me enough money to live on Tamarind Ave/Area. Especially, North of Okeechobee.
Yes, they cleaned it up. Put up pretty buildings and the area is up in coming. I still wouldn't live there!
Good Luck :)

and you will find crime is low in the area. You might also subscribe (free) to crimealert.com, using an address in the area, and when a crime occurs they email you back and describe the type of crime and pinpoint it on a map of the area.
When you are ready to zero in and look at properties, let us work together - I explain the whole process from finding the property and making an offer to the closing and beyond. I have sold other Canadians who are very happy with their purchases. I will also send you a detailed preview of the area by email, if you wish.

You will find that most of us realtors will hesitate to give you an answer here as we have to be careful about what we say so we do not get caught in both ethical and federal violations.
Here is what I will say. Most of south florida is safe for people of all races and color. We are a true melting pot of diversity and cultures. As with all areas there are bad seeds that you may feel uncomfortable with based on your own sense of what you are looking for.
As a general rule, wintering residents are very safe, no matter what their color, race or language. We have plenty of french speaking folks here as well as portugese, haitian, jamaican, spanish, european, eastern european, and the list goes on and on. My point being that you will be fine provided you choose an area that you are comfortable in and with based on your needs and desires.
I hope this helps. Like i said, we as realtors have to be very careful about what we say is okay or not okay as far as an area. it is serious enough that we can lose our license by "steering" people in and out of a comunity.
I would be happy to show you the area or spend more time with you if you like. I have a large french canadian client base.
