Hi Monna,

In late September of each year, all Sunset Beach, NC property owners receive a statement from the Brunswick County Tax Office listing both the Brunswick County and the Sunset Beach taxes payable by the first of January.

A good resource for Brunswick County residents is the County website - http://www.brunsco.net - where a property owner can view both their county and town taxes.

As far as North Myrtle Beach, SC a legal resident in 2012 was taxed at four (4) percent times the millage rate and a non-resident was taxed at six (6) percent times the millage rate.

At age 65, with at least one year of legal residency, there is a Homestead Exemption of $50,000.

As you may know, property tax millage amounts vary throughout the state of South Carolina and throughout each County. I would suggest you email the County assessor’s office (assessor@horrycounty.org) to find out what this year’s millage rate is for North Myrtle Beach.

You may have already done this, but I also would suggest consulting a tax advisor for questions relating to your particular tax situation.

Continued success!

the taxes are less in Sunset Beach (not on Island) than NMB. you have city and county taxes in NMB, but only county taxes in Sunset Beach. however the taxes are based on the value of the home. in NMB you get a discount on the tax rate for being a primary resident (4%) vs. non-owner occupant (6%). you get an even better discount if you are older than 60 as a primary resident at the (3%). the taxes are still within a few houdred dollars difference of the two areas. i love talking taxes with my northeast clients. just move the decimal place. we are still know as the poor south. Sunset Beach is a much quiter location as you can drive to NMB for the action, but leave it when the tourist, bikers, spring breakers and senior week quests come to visit.
