I'm just talking about building materials and labor which should not be affected by location, view, septic, etc. When we built a house many years ago there was a ballpark per square foot figure to help estimate the total cost.

That would depend on what you want to build and for materials and labor you might want to try getting a quote from a few different contractors to see what might fit your needs.

100% depends on location. If the lot is a bluff view lot vs. a lot that is close to a junk yard would be much different. The lot is really the determining factor of the price of the home. Hence the price difference from Anchorage to the Valley (Palmer/Wasilla area)

I have to agree with Robert Bickel's answer there is many factors that have to be considered to truely get a price per square foot. Working with a realtor and builder to combine there fields of expertise may get the best results. Also comparing prices.

Hello HouseHunter,
The average cost to build depends on many factors such as size of building, style of building, style of foundation, type of heating system to be used, the purpose of the building (residental or commercial, loaction, cost of well(or hook to public), cost of septic (or hook up to public), cost of Power extensions, cost of natural gas extensions, and last but not least the cost of the property that the building is to be placed on.
There are many fine builders out here in the valley with some very appealing designs whom many of them you can find on their websites by doing a simple search.
