Hi Jane,
The area that you mentioned in San Mateo is called the Lauriedale area and at the present time there are no active listings for rent in that area on the MLS website. At the present time there are only 11 properties in the city of San Mateo that are for rent on the MLS and the prices range from $2,400 to $7,500 depending on size and location.
I would recommend that you start with the website listed below which is the public side of the same website that Realtors use.

Always the Best,

One good way to see if you are in a good area is to ask the police dept about crime in the area. Even if you don't have children, usually the better the schools, the better area it is.

If you need help finding a rental, you might want to call Fay 650-455-6072, http://www.Faytherentalqueen.com,

Good luck,

I have lived in San Mateo for over 5 years now and really enjoy it. The area you are referring to is in the Hillsdale neighborhood, I have attached a link below to the real estate guide page on Trulia where you can find out some more info.

Hope this helps, good luck.
