Anna had some good recomendations, I'd suggest visiting the area at different times of the day to check things out, maybe over the weekend, to get a good feel for the area. You should be able to look up the local police or county sherrifs deptartment and get some statistics for an area also.
Best of luck!

Visit a neighborhood several times to get a sense of belonging. Check out area statistics; real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Real estate agents are not allowed to comment on whether or not a neighborhood is good or bad. There are a Federal Fair Housing Laws that prohibit that from happening. It is up to the individual to make their own determination about a specific area. Should a real estate agent comment on such a thing, it could be steering which is a prohibited act.
