When Brooklyn was first established in was broken down into six Dutch towns being Gravesend, Brooklyn, Flatlands, Flatbush, New Utrecht and Bushwick. No matter what area in Brooklyn you refer to, if you go back far enough it would have been in one of these six original neighborhoods.
Over time new neighborhoods evolve and the residents ultimately decide what is what and where is where and it becomes common knowledge.
Regardless of what you call it, it and Brooklyn as a whole is a great place to live.
