Jenny,

I just listed a wonderful home in Olde Wythe off of Powhatan Parkway yesterday. Take a drive by, grab a flyer and let me know if you want to take a look inside! They have completely restored/renovated the entire house and it really shows well. There's nothing else left for the new owner to do but enjoy it!

My husband and I are looking for a home and have considered the Wythe area as well. We have a one year old son so safety of the neighborhood weighs greatly for us as well.; My brother is a police officer for Hampton and he assured me that the Wythe area is a wonderful area to live in. He said several public officials live there and complain about everything (haha) so nothing ever happens and the only calls they get are about people out on the benches by the water later in the evening which is a public area and not right next to your the homes.

The area also offers very cute charming homes.

Good luck.

Hi Jennifer,

I assume that you're referring to the Olde Wythe area of Hampton and if so, I'm a Realtor and a resident, and I am completely enjoying raising my 11 year old daughter here. As with every neighborhood in America, we all have our blemishes. But other factors mentioned in previous posts of course should be considered, in addition to the type of home you prefer.

I'm a buyer's agent and I have found that I could show a real nice upgraded historic 1940's home to someone in Olde Wythe, and they might not like it just because "it's old," and they'd prefer something newer in Crowne Pointe or Grist Mill Estates. Then, I could show a buyer properties is Grist Mill or Crown Pointe, and they would hate the "cookie-cutter row homes," and prefer something with a lot more charm like Olde Wythe.

But overall, on a whole, I like it here, my daughter has made good friends, and I love living in a historic quaint home nestled in trees and near the water. Would I rather live in Williamsburg on a rolling hillside? You bet! But unfortunately, I didn't qualify for that much home :)

Hi Jennifer,
As stated by previous agents we can not Steer you to or from A community. I suggest you do what the other agents suggested to drive thru the community day, night and weekend. Go to the state web site for register sex offenders, http://sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov/sor/ or call 804-674-2000. Also call Hampton city Crime Analysis Division and ask them about the crime rate for this area. They have the city broken up into zones; you will need to provide them with street names and they will send you a map with highlghted areas with high crime rates for that zone, a chart of offenses for that zone and offenses reported for the particular streets you are intrested in.

I hope this help you if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. I will be glad to assit you with any other questions or take you on a tour of the great city of Hampton.

Good luck,

Jennifer,

As previoulsy stated, this is a question that unfortunately a Realtor can't fully answer. Your idea of a "safe neighborhood for children" may be completely different than my idea or the next person. I wouldn't want to steer you toward or away from a particular neighborhood based on my personal experiences or bias. There are a lot of resouces available, however, to help you make that decision. One thing I highly recommend doing is checking out the unfamiliar area at various times of the day and days of the week. A quiet neighborhood during the day may look completely different on a Saturday night. I also recommend asking neighbors about the neigborhood. If you are uncomfortable knocking on their doors, I can accompany you to accomplish this. You'd be surprised how much good (and bad) information you can find out by asking around. Another resource that you should take a look at is the "Sex Offender and Crimes against Minors Registry":

http://sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov/sor/index.html

If a registered offender does turn up in your neighborhood, you may want to ask your agent to confirm that they still actually live there. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. I cover the entire Peninsula area, including Hampton, and I'd be happy to any additional questions.
