Steve Caster…, Other/Just Looking in California

I need to find out what her house was worth in 1979 when my dad died.

Asked by Steve Castersen, California Thu Apr 2, 2009

My mom recently sold her house in California:
8030 Kentland Ave.
West Hills, CA 91304
She now needs to know for tax purposes what it was worth in 1979 when my father died.
It was a 3 bed/2 bath home and I can use the price for a home nearby that sold in that year.
Can you please help as to how to obtain this information

Dear Steve,

If you pull a standard title report, it will show the last three sales. If you need a more detailed one, I can put you in touch with someone to do that for you.

Also, you may want to check escrow documents or title documents that may have that information listed as well.

Good luck.

You need to contact an appraiser in your area, or the area in which the property is located, and request a retro valuation on the property for the date of death of your father (XX / XX / 1979). Unless you or your mother have estate tax and/or probate records from 1979, or can obtain them from the executor or trustee, which should have the value as of that date, even if no estate tax was due.

Hi Steve,
Unfortunately the MLS does not maintain data that far back. I know a client of mine paid an appraiser to do a similar cost basis calculation. I am not sure what it cost. Maybe a Title Company could also provide the information, I am not sure. I hope that helps.
good luck,
Walter
