How do I find the value of a house for 1999?

My sister and I were added to my Mom's deed in 1999 and she passed away last year--the house just sold and we need to know the value when we were added to the deed.

I can only speak as an appraiser in Connecticut, but I have had several assignments similar to yours. The appraiser inspects the property today and tries to determine value as of a specific date in the past. They can research data from the Multiple Listing Service (most here in Connecticut if not online are archived in book format). Little more work involved for the appraiser so expect a somewhat higher fee. They will have to determine the condition at that time for comparable sales used as well as the subject property, market conditions, and can also research info from the cost approach etc.. Good Luck, Jim

Bonnie,
I just dealt with this issue with a property that I am selling in a Trust. You have to have an appraisal of the 1999 value. I recommend Wayne Six of Six and Associates. 301-694-5626. They will most likely go back in the records and find comparable sales.
