How can I find out who recently bought a home?

Asked by Becky Meredith, Houston, TX Wed Nov 12, 2008

I am interested in a home that someone evidently bought then abandoned quickly. How can I find out who bought it, when, and when they walked away? I am hoping that will give me a clue as to WHY they did this and whether it may be a problem for me.

I'm an austin Realtor, if you'd like you can give me the address and I can do some research for you. You can either email me or call.

Travis County Deed Records are online at
Left side of page; Search Official records and scroll down to enter the address.
This will tell you who owned it and when. Why they walked away is another issue.
Always have a good inspector look at the property.

Dear Becky,
You don't need anyone to do this for you as it is public record. Simply go online and look up Travis County Tax Office or follow this link:

You can look it up by the specific propertys street address. I wish you the best of luck. Please call me if I can help you with your real estate needs.

Hi Becky,
The owner's identity is public record. I have direct access to county tax records in Austin if you would like to contact me and we can look into it.

I'd call the realtor who listed it or see if they will give you the name of the agent who brought the buyer.

Why do you think they abandoned the property? Could it be a flip? They bought it rehabbed it and now want to sell it to you. I've also seen people buy houses and get transferred a week later. Are you using a realtor? Ask them to help you find out. Ask the neighbors....they usually have way more information than any realtor will have.

Why would it be a problem for you? Are you considering purchasing this home or were you the seller?

You should check with teh assessors office and/or the tax collector. You will be able to look up the owners name as well as purchase information. If you wanted to take it further you could go to the county registry of deeds and look up the deed and mortgage info knowing the owners name and date of purchase. i hope this helps and good luck with your search
