Great question! Just because an agent has a lot of listings or sold a lot of properties does not mean that they are the best agent. The best agent for you is someone who will be what "you" need them to be. If honesty is important to you then you need to find out how honest agents are. Does the agent just yes you to death simply because they want your business or will they tell you how it is? Is ethics important to you? Is protecting your best interest important to you? How important is knowledge of the Agreement of Sale and will your agent know it inside and out so as to get you the best possible deal for you? So, you shouldn't just count how many listings an agent has because having a listing means it hasn't sold yet. Selling a home doesn't mean that agent is the best. Of those homes that agent sold, how many was that agent a "dual" agent which means they represented both sides which means that agent was not negotiating for the buyer or the seller. They were simply a mediator. Do your homework and actually interview agents.

Seeing how many signs are in a neighborhood can be misleading. After all, that only means that the homes are on the market. You should get good referrals from friends and family, or get good data. Better yet, get both, and then make your decision.
I think you asked a great question, one that many other people might wonder about.
You need to be concerned about the sale of your property and not the sale of others. With no dis-respect to Realtors that sell many listings, I have "picked up the pieces" after a seller listed with a "top agent" and it was not pretty. For agents with a lot of listings it is a numbers game. If a couple of properties don't sell, it's no big deal.
The sale of your property IS a big deal to you. So I suggest talking with three Realtors and selected the one that you believe will do the best job. Not all Realtors are alike, and you want the Realtor best for your needs.

You and your agent need to have trust, friendship and understanding to make you feel comfortable in the process!
You shoudl also ask what their marketing plan, where they advertise, what they think the value of your house is, what they think you should ask and what they think you will get. Make sure they only do assisted showings. Larger agents use unassisted showings where someoen calls a showing desk, usually in a nother state or even country, they are given a lock box code, you have a stranger in your house and no one is there to explain to them what makes your house special, where is the lot lines or how old is the roof. Bigger is not better, often they wont have the tome to give you as they are spread out too much, consider independant brokers, family brokers and such. Beware fo companies that talk about how much Real Estate they sell as they never disclose how many agents it takes to sell those homes. If Agency "A" sells 20 homes with 10 Agents and Agency "B" sells 30 homes with 50 Agents, which do you think would serve you better?

I have a list of questions every seller should ask there agent if your interested in that. Also look for agents that have designations. ABR, GRI, CRS etc.... these agents have spent time and money on their career and have learned a lot!
