If you are talking about a specific period in American history, and houses still in existance which specifically relate to those times, for example, the revolutionary war or civil war period ..etc., I suggest you
contact the local chamber of commerce who could guide you directly to your area of interest. The Long Island North Shore, has a very strong colonial period background (for lack of a better word), especially Huntington.
