Selling your home takes more than placing a "For Sale by Owner" sign in your yard. You should have a keen eye for detail and know how to present your property in the best manner. You need to be an expert in marketing, negotiating and having the right assessment of your home's worth and value, as well as know the market and what's happening in your own neighborhood. You need to be able to fish out potential buyers from the nosey neighbors as well as protecting yourself and securing your valuables from thieves and onlookers. You have to be a motivator and be able to navigate the real estate transaction seamlessly from beginning to end. You need to be able to qualify the buyer if they are not already approved for financing. Most importantly, you need to be at the buyer's beck and call 24/7 and be able to show your home and respond to inquiries at a moments notice.
It does take a lot of work and it's not as easy as some might make it seem. Most owners that try to sell on their own eventually turn to a professional for help once they realize that it is hard work.

The BEST way is to connect with a good local Realtor, with several years of experience so that you get help with staging and preparing your home for sale, inside and out, so that the professional photos will
to some degree "sell" your home on the internet or at least get the Buyers interest to want to see your home. Your Realtor will also make sure that you price your home right, showing you the current competition in your market and what similar homes have recently sold and so many more advantages...

But having said that I understand you want to go the by owner way, do not forget that if a buyer wants to see your home, and they have committed to a Realtor, that Realtor will want your the seller's commitment that if this Agent's Buyers will make and offer and buy your home that you will pay a certain
% in commission to the Buyers Agent at the closing....

So it all depends really on the type of property, size, location and price range.

Price it well, prepare it well, may be some staging, moving around or moving out some furniture,
great photos, some painting etc. and then post it on For Sale By owner sites, and see what happens.
I still would suggest to connect with a good local Realtor, will make the sale and all its details

I wonder if you also repair your own break on the car, or perform surgery on your family members? But seriously, interview a couple of experienced realtors in your neighborhood. They will give you a good idea what it takes to sell your home and most likely will also explain you all the advantages of selling with a realtor vs. trying it by yourself.

Make sure you understand the risks of selling your home by yourself. The biggest risk by far is that you won't be able to price it correctly and could leave a considerable amount of money on the table. The far majority of people who try to see it own their own eventually wind up listing it with a Realtor. Why not save yourself the time loss and list it with a top agent in your area?

Anyone thinking of selling their home by themselves, needs to really consider why they think that they can do the same job as a professional who has studied the business for years and has years of experience dealing with many situations that arise;and how will you be able to negotiate with experienced investors who will use your inexperience to their advantage. My advice, realtors do not charge for consultations, why not sit down with several and ask them why they can do a better job selling your house, than you can yourself.

3. A Realtor may already have in hand a number of qualified prospects for the sale therefore saving the Homeowner time and money.

4. A Realtor can prevent that the Homeowner is taken advantaged of by prospect Buyers who often wish to negotiate and/or modified the terms and conditions originally established by the Homeowner.

5. A Realtor handles the entire process of the sale on behalf of the Homeowner from advertising, showing of the property, pre-qualification/verification of funds, drawing of the sales contract, assisting in inspections, title, walk-through to closing.

There are so many reasons why sell by owner is not a good idea:

FSBO usually sell at 20% less than listed by a Realtor
FSBO don't last more than 3 weeks before they listed with a Realtor
FSBO don't have the experience and knowledge of Real Estate Market and norms
FSBO are the target of savvy investors that they work with Realtors

NAR (National Association of Realtors): "The typical FSBO home sold for $174,900 compared to $215,000 for agent-assisted home sales" in 2012

Well Usually the commission is only 6% standard or 8% if your property required and extra effort. and it will sell for a top dollars in the market. ( this is if you use an agent ) oh and don't forget you can be relax from sue and any other fail to comply with the county regulations selling real estate. you have many disclosures you should be aware before they turn against you.

FSBO. ( For Sale By Owner)

Usually the sale price is 10% to 30% lower than what it could be sold by a realtor.
FSBO are usually harrahs by people who try to take advantage of you or try to find out a way to sue you and get some money back for the lack of knowledge.
FSBO is the perfect fish for Experience Real Estate Flippers.
FSBO are either selling over price or selling to low.
FSBO at the end hire an attorney that cost 1000 of dollars to close the deal. and they don't handle the marketing, showings and prospect buyer like a Realtor Will do.

Well you have many options and different ways to save 6% or more on the sale of your property.
Remember you don't know the sale price and how much you save until the closing date. Usually most of the FSBO don't save the Real Estate commision at the end.

For sure that is not the best way to sell a house. You will be dealing with a Realtor at the other, who will know how to get the best possible deal for his/her client and you will be on your own. This is not a home remodeling project, the do-it-yourself approach is not in your favor. Your house is probably your most valuable possession.
