What would buyers prefer on 5 acres: a new log cabin home or a falling down "handyman special"?

We own 5 acres in Oak Hill (just outside New Smyrna Beach) that we would like to sell when the market gets better, but it has a house that is falling down. We don't know what would be better in terms of resale value: keep the house as-is and sell as a handyman special or put a new log cabin home on it. Is there a market for log cabin homes in the country?

Christee,

Generally speaking, people coming to Florida are looking forward to enjoying the culture and life style that existe here.......this includes typs of building construction. Although the log cabin may have huge appeal in other locations we have not had or heard of a single log cabin request by buyers.

This does not mean there is no interest in this building construction but it is a clear indication of a market tendency that can not be ignored. The bottom line with this type of home is you would be embracing a much smaller pool of potential buyers.

Additionally, today's buyers are for the most part, looking for deals. Thus, a five acre lot with a handy man special may be more in line with todays buyer's needs than a new log cabin.

Because buying property is so closely tied to personal preference, it is impossible to provide a reliable answer on which you can depend but it would not be wise to ignore existing trends.

Good luck,
