There are steps you can take to delay the process. They can take up to several months which would give you time to get the house in order and also possibly extend the time you can stay there.

This is called a short sale. If that is the case you would need to talk with the lender to see if they will accept a lower amount than what you owe and if you are behind the late payments and penalties add up quickly.
