You should have paid for a survey when you bought your home and you should have been given a copy at your closing. Check with your closing documents and see if there is a copy in the paperwork and you already have it. If not contact the title company or your realtor. they should be able to either pull it from their files, or get it from the survey company for you. If you bought from a builder, they may not have done one (they may have had a plat map instead) in which case, you would have to have one done now if you want one. The county may have a very basic one in their records as well that you can get a copy of, but if it's not a true survey, depending on what you want it for, it may not be much good to you (you wont' be able to put in a fence or build an addition with it, but could use it for general reference). Go to the county tax records and click on map view and then click on plat
If you live in a subdivision you can usually find a copy of the Survey recorded with the county register of deeds. Many counties have online deed search abilities. Do a search on Google for "your county" register of deeds or tax records. You may also find out by reading your deed, it may reference a map book and page for your property. I hope this helps you.
In most areas the local municipality's county clerk's office records such documents. Go to your county clerk's office and ask if this can be obtained. It seems most recently that surveys may not always be required when purchasing a re-sale home in a residential area. If the purchase was made with a mortgage, the bank may require a survey.... for a couple of reasons... one: it's on a lot that is larger than the norm... maybe 10 acres; two: the appraiser noted that fences, pools or other improvements may have been made on the existing lot or neighboring properties and there could be some concerns regarding encroachment.
If it is a simple city lot, there are almost always tax maps that will show dimensions and lot outlines. If that is what you're looking for most municiplaities are getting that stuff up on line and you can download it as a pdf file.
Good luck Beth!
Hi Beth, You should be able to go back to the title company or the closing attorney or closing agent that handled your closing transaction and see if you can get a copy of the survey from them. If not, ask them who the survey company was, and contact the survey company directly.
If you have a new home built on the lot, you may be able to contact the builder and they may be able to provide you with a survey.
