What’s the single most important piece of advice for people filing their taxes as a first-time home owner?

Keep good records. Also get a copy of your settlement statement (HUD) for your tax preparer. If you can"t find your copy from closing ask your Realtor to get you a copy. there are items on the HUD that you will want to deduct.

I think every homeowner should have an accountant and an estate attorney.

When I am asked this question..my reply is consult a tax person in order to receive the best tax advise.

Deduct all interest paid and property taxes paid also.
