Good afternoon.
Energy payback times (EPBTs) will vary depending on climate (latitude) and type of Photovoltaic (PV) panel. The International Energy Agecy IEA report "Life Cycle Inventories and Life Cycle Assessments of Photovoltaic Systems" by Vasilis Fthenakis, of the Brookhaven National Laboratory indicates that The latest EPBT typical rooftop installation in south Europe, (i.e., irradiation of 1700 kWh/m2/yr), correspond to 1.7, 1.7 and 0.8 years for mono-Si, multi-Si, and CdTe PV technologies, respectively.

There is currently a glut of solar panels, which may make solar more appealing at this time. There are some other good resources on Building Green website about this.topic.
