While the larger the home the less per square foot it costs to build it all depends on location, land, and the finish out.

I'd break it down into three categories:

Basic / Tract-Home Grade approx. $600,000
- factory cabinets
- low cost flooring,
- very little trim,
- one paint color throughout,
- bottom grade everything

Semi-Custom approx. $800,000
- custom cabinets,
- better carpet,
- some wood & tile,
- crown moulding,
- granite counters,
- basic stainless appliances

Custom / Luxury +$1,200,000
- Custom cabinets w/ built in bookshelves & entertainment centers,
- Hand scraped solid hardwood floors,
- Expensive tile,
- thick high-grade granite & marble countertops,
- Custom / Faux painting
- Custom Appliances (Viking, Sub-Zero, etc)
- Multi-room audio,
- Surveillance
- Sky is the limit

Like others have stated, look at houses like what you want and see what they're selling for and / or contact a builder in the area you would like to build for some ideas.

The cost to build relies on many factors. It will cost more to rebuild a home after major damage than the initial build in most cases. It also will depend on the property you are building on. Is it level or will it be necessary to do a lot of work or excavation to get the area suitable to build on.

Your best be would be to start speaking with builders in the area and have a good idea of where you want to build so you can get some accurate numbers. As you get closer make sure you get multiple bids and take a good hard look at their track records. I would also make sure you talk to several home owners who have used the builder and ask about their experiences with them.

Not making the right decision when choosing a builder can not only cause you a lot of money but also a lot of headaches.

A lot....
Let's just say 1mil and make it simple.

Of course you can make it more complicated.
Do you want a house with very basic finishes...vinyl and carpet floors.
Or do you want marble and hand scraped hardwoods throughout.
Carpet might be $1-$2 square ft.....$10,000 worth of floors in 7200sqft.
Marble and wood might be $10/sqft or $72.000.
Now take that theory and apply it to cabinets, windows, doors, kitchens, baths, landscaping, pools, etc.
and land....do you need a lot...or do you have it already and just need to build now? How big a lot?

What you might do is search for newer homes about the size you want. Look at the prices. So they are not new homes perhaps, but might give you an idea of what you can get for different price points.
