Does a homeowner get charged more money for homeowners insurance if the home has a fireplace? If so how much more should I expect to be charged?

Thanks in advance~

That is usually the least of your insurance rate. Fireplaces are rated more for the cost to replace one than the chance of it starting on fire. We write insurance in multiple states and are based in Michigan. If you need to shop your insurance rate, try us. Call us or visit our website. 888-GET-GLIGA or http://www.getgliga.com

It is a question that you'll be asked by your insurance agent. I guess it depends on whether or not you want to replace it if you need to rebuild. I have a fireplace, and I still have a really great rate with State Farm. Do some shopping around...

Hi! Melissa, That depends on the type of fireplace it is. A built in wood burning fireplace may be more expensive than gas. If it's free standing, it may be more . You need to contact a local Insurance company. They will get you a figure right to the dollar amount. If you need some names and numbers, please feel free to email me. Thanks, Mike

Just wanted to give a update for others that maybe interested in this original question of mine. I DID NOT GET CHARGED A ENORMOUS FEE FOR HAVING A FIRE PLACE. I actually got a great deal through Allstate on my homeowners insurance. While in the process I even switched my auto insurance. I now save 50% on my full coverage car insurance. Do check around on the rates. My previous insurer (had been with them six years never late on bill) wanted to charge me $200 more than the rate I got from Allstate.

Got quote from State Farm my current insurer for $546.00/ year. I do not think that is too bad of a deal. I haven't checked any place else though. I should do that.

Good question for your insurance person who is going to provide your one year paid up policy up front. I think if you have a wood burning stove they may tack some on, however as Lynn indicated, it is a common feature in most newer homes and it is likely that it would not change your premium that much. Best wishes on your new home. Mike
