Years ago, a coach home held the carriages and horses, but today a coach home is a condo with a common door for 4 apartments. 2 are up a level and 2 on the main level. Lexington homes originally came up with this style of condo in the 1970's and it has remained very popular. I just had a listing of a 2 bedroom and 2 bath with attached garage in Schaumburg and it was listed for 199900. So yesterdays "coach home" is not todays.

Hi Gilbert. Below is the link to another thread here on Trulia that discussed the legality of coach houses. As far as I can tell, coach houses were used to house carriages and coaches similar to a garage. Now, I think they are converted to living quarters and some use them as rentals.

additional rental income, or can rent out or owner can live their free rent. It's good to buy property with a coah house, because once again, it's addtional income.

The coach house used to be for horses & carriages.

Some properties added additional living space & called them coach houses (usually landlocked properties...meaning no where to put a garage) in the rear of the lot.

Hi Gilbert,

The original true coach house many years ago tended to be associated with bigger homes that required a separate area for horses and carriage/s.
As demand for living space increased in the city and nearby neighborhoods such as Lakeview, structures were built to the rear of lots that were always intended to be for residential use and were given the more cozy label of coach house.
Today, you cannot build a coach house and many have been replaced by garages or demolished to make way for new single family homes or condominiums.
