Active listing, with contingency means they have an offer, but for whatever reason the buyers can't close until they either sell their home or something of the nature, thus meaning they (the buyers) want to purchase made an offer to purchase, but have allowed the sellers to continue showing the home and accept other offers, in which the buyers will have 1st pick to close earlier or withdraw their offer.

Pending Listing means the sellers have accepted an offer and aren't accepting any other offers until either the buyers close, or they withdraw their offer.
