Check out http://www.familywatchdog.us/ It gives you all the crime stats

its a easy way to look up crime! If you are looking to move there, Try to use a agent you know. If you don't know anyone, I can send you to someone that I know will take care of you.

Renting is smart. The only issue is that most places require 1 year lease. Also as you said, the cost of living is much lower, the home prices are so much lower, but the rental fees are still higher. Its kind of a hard choice. If you are not from the area, I would never recommend doing anything without an agent who only represents you, not the seller. You need to hear the pros and cons of everything. Shoot me a email Mike@MarylandHomeFinder.com I will get you hooked up with the agent down there who works with rentals and sales.

Police departments report directly to this site, it's not a third party site. Are there any specific areas in the Triangle that you are looking at? Down here owning blows renting out of the water in terms of return on investment and bang for your buck. I am a Triangle native and would love to answer any additional questions/concerns you might have!

The City of Raleigh also publishes crime rates. http://www.raleighnc.gov/home/content/Police/Articles/Online…

Collin is accurate about the rentals being high down here and in most cases last year where I have helped buyers who were formally renting, their monthly mortgage payment, including escrows, was lower by as much as $200 per month than they were paying in rent. If I can provide you any personal service, please use the contact link under my picture. I also invite you to check out mt website below. My wife and I are also from New York originally ( Me: east end of Long Island Her: Red Hook in Dutchess County) We've been here since 1993 and love the area!!
