Hope this helps.
Hope all is well in NY. The basement kitchen is one thought. I have also seen this term used out west here for an elaborate patio or deck which includes all that you need to cook, barbeque and entertain outside as you would in your indoor kitchen. It is cooler and more convenient than 'slaving over a hot stove' inside on a 90-plus degree day. Hope that helps.

Wow, that's an old-fashioned term we don't hear all that often anymore! A "Summer Kitchen" is a kitchen installed on a lower level or basement of a Single Family home. The concept comes out of a time when air conditioning wasn't as prevalent as it is today. To cook a big family meal during the Summer downstairs was a lot more comfortable on the occupants of the home than using the regular kitchen on the main floor of the house.
The legality of such kitchens should be verified with the municipality in the area where you are shopping for your home. Often these "Summer Kitchens" are not legally installed and a Homeowner could be subject to violations and/or fines.
