Looking to relocate there in an area that doesn't focus on renting to students...

You can look at the map and if it is isn't in walking distance of campus it is a safer bet.

There really isn't any one area where there is a large student rental population. The Smith students stay pretty much in campus housing or Smith owned apartments. There are some students who commute to UMass but I think for the most part, they live over here to escape the campus and downtown problems. There are a good number of students who also work in Northampton while attending various colleges in the area.

I suggest spending a few evenings in downtown Northampton and seeing what the vibe is.

Good luck!

Northampton is NOT like a regular college town where the town’s population is inverted by the student population. Though Smith College is the largest women’s college in the country—it is only about 2,700 students while the community has around 30,000. And besides Smith's students are pretty much required to live on campus.

Northampton is not like Amherst. No rowdy roving bands of drunkards.
