Taxes will vary in different communities depending on what the property is being used for and its zoning. For example, in some areas a scenic view or waterfront will impact value and translate into taxes. Property used for commercial purposes is typically taxed at a higher rate than residential property. Land that is used for agricultural purposes is taxed at a lesser rate than that same land if it's converted to a subdivision. I would suggest if you are interested in a specific property to research not only the current and anticipated assessments, as they may be changing, but also the mill rates which determines the amount of taxation based on the assessment. Mill rates are normally up for review annually during budget discussions. Not only is it important to know these numbers but investigate what you get for the money you pay. What services does the community provide? For instance, is garbage pick-up included in bill? How are the schools within the community funded. Will you send your children there or will you prefer a private education on top of the taxes you already pay into the system? Many of these questions may be answered by a Realtor representing the property, the assessor's or treasurer's office for the community in which the property is located.
