They are 2 different towns, each with their own flavor. Although they are big, each has it's own smaller sections that still give them a smaller town feel, with all the conveniences of a larger one like being close to the highways, great shopping, etc.
I am familiar and have done business in both towns so please give me a call if you would like more info.
Good luck in your home search.

I think that the Schools in Fairlawn have no bus service but they do have it in Paramus.
Please correct me if I am wrong but that is what I heard and for some people it is important to have the kids dropped of by a bus. Both are great towns! Great Schools. Good luck!!
Taxes are lower in Paramus because there is a huge retail base in numerous shopping centers that takes a large measure of the tax burden off homeowners' shoulders. Schools in both towns are excellent. I agree with Peter that Fair Lawn is a little quieter in terms of vehicular traffic.
Paramus offers NYC commuters bus stops ... Fair Lawn has bus stops and a train station.
I lived in Paramus from 1953 until I was married in 1976. I still visit regularly ... my sister owns the home on Benton Road where I grew up.
Taxes are probably higher in Fair Lawn and lots are in the main part smaller. Apart from that both have good school systems and good commuting but in Paramus you suffer from the mall traffic I always have a liking for Fairlawn as there are more affordable houses for the young buyer.
