Asked by ramprakash.balasubramanian, Eden Prairie, MN Wed Jan 9, 2013

am planning to rent a town home and move out of the apartment - please advise what will be the maintenance charges for managing heat, electricity, water etc as the association takes care of the trash and landscaping.

Probably you are confusing. Town home has Association and the Association charges will be part of your rent. The other charges you are referring are the utility bills -- Electricity, Heat, Telephone and water charges. Most probably depending on the season, these will vary from $100-$200. But these charges you pay when you are renting apartment also. you can negotiate with your landlord and negotiate with townhome landlord also.

When you finalize your lease, have your agent make sure which utilities you are paying,. In some town homes, the association fee which should be covered in the rent, also covers the water and sewer.. Good luck with the move... town homes feel more private it seems than apartments do, Enjoy your new space and privacy. Liz, 612-986-4105

Congratulations on your move! You can call the utility companies and they can tell you what the prior tennat paid with the address. As Keith said, it depends on your use, but they can put you on a budget helper plan so you pay the same each month, rather than higher in the winter. Last winter was pretty mild, so keep that in mind. The post said you are in Eden Prairie. You can look up utility companies on the EP city web site:
http://www.edenprairie.org/index.aspx?page=362
You can click and copy this URL or go to the EP (or any metro city) home page and seach "utilities."
You can check other units with the utility companies by address, but end units usually have higher costs/more windows.

Check with the association on the water bill, too. They ofter pay water.

Enjoy your nbew home!

Maintenance costs are completely subjective depending on usage of the utilties. One person in a 2000 square foot townhouse can run a electric and heating bill for $200/month and the other can be at $350/month in the same home. I am currently in a comparable residence and live alone and pay around $150-$200 a month for heat, water, sewer, and natural gas.
