I would suggest that you start by making a list of your usual activities, such as where you like to shop, what kind of stores or malls; do you have hobbies, do you like to get involved with community events or volunteer. How do you feel about driving a lot. Communities such as Oakmont are wonderful, but they are a long way from downtown Santa Rosa, and you have to either drive a lot or take their shuttle. You might also consider how you feel about weather. Sonoma County weather is foggy closer to the coast, and warmer inland towards Sonoma. There are also several senior centers and you might choose to be near them, or near some of the medical centers. When you have some of these questions figured out, then you might consider contacting an agent to send you a list of homes that meet your goals! Price is also a consideration as there are many different types of Senior developments. Besides Oakmont, there are other senior communities that an agent can check out for you!

Great question. Hidden Valley Lake http://(www.hvla.com) is a great place for senior citizens. We are a gated community with home prices down to $100K, if you love to golf and enjoy the slower pace of life this is the place for you. We have a 18 hole golf course, beaches, pools. On an average day there are golf carts everywhere even if you don't golf. Take a drive a check out the area.
Walnut Creek was recently rated one of the 10 best cities for retirees by USA today. Consider Rossmoor, an Active Adult Community - located on 2200+ acres and a variety of living options to suit almost every need. A great value in the S.F. Bay Area. Oakmont is a wonderful community as noted below. A client of mine just closed escrow a couple of weeks ago on a wonderful home there and another is seriously considering there as well after a move from San Diego. You might also consider the smaller River Bend community in Healdsburg, where I just saw a lovely new listing today on tour. Del Webb has a community in Cloverdale which is north of Healdsburg. Oakmont has the greatest variety of housing stock however with everything from small condos to million dollar homes on the hill with acreage. They have been built over the course of the last 30 years or so with new homes going in today.
The City of Sonoma is beautiful and has a large second home and retiree population. In my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful places to live as well. (And did I mention all the great restaurants?)
Oakmont is located in Santa Rosa, CA along the scenic HWY 12 corridor. Homes range from 1bd 1 ba with carports to large view homes over 3000 sq ft. Many have views of the Valley of the Moon and Hood Mtn. 55 and older for age restriction. Has a market, post office/banks, coffee house, medical offices and more. About 4000 homes. Glad you asked! Oakmont Village is a beautiful community for 55 and over. Oakmont is located just at the east boundry of Santa Rosa in the Valley of the Moon on Hwy 12, near Kenwood. Very much in the heart of Wine Countyr. There are two golf courses, tennis, swimming, a nice library, gym and so many other activities are offered. You can be as active as you want to be or just relax and enjoy the beautiful nature that surrounds Oakmont. Oakmont has a wonderful Village Market, Espresso Yes! coffee shop, Curves, hair solon, banking, and more. Quail Inn Restaurant has a wonderful menu and the view from the Quail's Nest (restaurant and bar) overlooks the golf courses and Mt. Hood in the Valley of the Moon. Oakmont is located on East Hwy 12 near Kenwood. My partner and I are brokers with Century 21 Valley of the Moon in Oakmont and would enjoy introducing you to this fine community. Santa Rosa is the county seat for Sonoma County and offers many services, health care, and educational opportunities at Santa Rosa Junior Collage and Sonoma State in nearby Rohnert Park.
