Start with friends, family, and perhaps future co-workers in the area where you are moving. Ask them if they used a Realtor and of their experiences. Word of mouth is usually the best way to go.
You can also try finding one here in Trulia. Go to "Trulia Voices", then "Members search", then search for a Real Estate Professional in the area where you are considering a purchase. You can read the advice an agent has offered. Reading the answers and questions offered by an agent may well reflect his or her general demeanor and experience level. If you feel the advice is sound, send that agent an email and get more information. Best of luck! Sun May 4 2008, 18:18 Web Reference: http://www.tammybenkwitt.houlihanlawrence.com

Mendy:
Welcome to NY! Real Estate is done a bit differently I am certain than where you are from. The first step would be to find the area you wish to be and then see who pops up in the top in that area for a search. I would then go to their page and see what they are all about. It is important to have a realtor that works in your best interest. In NY, a realtor can represent either thebuyer or the seller in the purchase of a home. I know, confusing.... Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask for references. Good luck in your search, and if I can be of any help, please feel free to contact me. Sun May 4 2008, 12:58

Hi Mendy,
If I may make a suggestion. Prudential Douglas Elliman has a tremendous presence in the New York market. With over 5000 employees I am sure there is an agent there for you. If you can tell me what specific area you are interested in, I could better direct you to the right office Please feel free to contact me if you are in need... First, determine what area of NY you are thinking about. You can than google Realtors in that area, or search on ActiveRain.com or Localism.com. Then google the Realtor names you come up with to see what kind of marketing they are doing and what kind of testimonials come up in their websites.
Or...if you contact me offline with the area you are seeking, I will be happy to make a recommendation. Sun May 4 2008, 09:19 Web Reference: http://GailGladstone.com
