is it ok for me to do a 3 month contract versus a 6 month contract with my realtor?

Yes of course, the choice is yours in what length of time you prefer to work with your agent. A shorter term will give you the opportunity to see how your home is marketed so to produce a lot of showings or hopefully offers. If you approve of your agent's efforts then the agreement can always be extended.

The length of your listing agreement is decided/negotiated between your agent and you.............whatever you agree to do works..

Yes, it is ok to negotiate the terms of your listing agreement with your agent.
