Good Afternoon,

The short answer is YES THEY MAY!

Taxes in Nassau County can be grieved each year from Jan 2 through March 2. This is a simple process and can be done online. You will need to find at least 3 comparable homes that have recently sold for less than the house in question is valued at by Nassau County and submit these for review. Sometime during that calendar year the County Assessment Office will send out a letter advising whether the assessment has been reduced or not. If there is a reduction, it will take effect 2 years from January of the original grievance period. For instance, if taxes were grieved in 2009, the reduction would take effect in January 2011.

If you would like additional information regarding this process, or have some comments, please contact me directly by phone at (516)410-3594 or by email at Arlynn@ArlynnPalmer.com.

You'll have to file and see, who knows what the assessor's department will determine; but without trying you'll never know.
