Sharon you should be able to file this year. Take your HUD settlement statement when you file your taxes and they can tell you how much you can claim. Usually it is points and taxes. Next year you will be able to claim any interest you paid and taxes paid. The lender will send you a 1098 which shows the amount you can claim. Don't forget to file at the tax office for the 4% for taxes. That is very important. Take the HUD Settlement statement with you to provide proof of your ownership. I hope that helped answer your question,

Hi Sharon,

You will get the $8k refund about 2 months after you file. You must file a paper return and include the closing statement and other documents. If you're expecting a large return in addition to the $8k, you may want to file online and then subsequently "amend" your return to include the $8k FTHB rebate. That way you can get part of your money quicker. The $8k may slow down getting your refund.

Hope this helps!

If I bought my house in the last 2 weeks (in February) and file my taxes in March, will I receive the $8,000 this May/June with my tax returns or must I wait to next year to receive the $8,000. Thanks again for the prompt response.

Hi Sharon,

Congratulations!

If you already filed your 2009 Tax Return you can file an "amended" return and get your First Time Homebuyer $8k credit if you qualify. If you haven't filed yet, you can file it with your tax return. You have file a paper return and here's a link to more info:

You will get the Tax Credit when you do your tax return. If you have already filed your 2009 return then you can do an amended return.
