The best school district would be Del Mar/Carmel Valley school district closer to ocean and the other one would be Poway school district which includes, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos and Poway. I'm going to suggest you start looking at Carlsbad, CA. Prices are reasonable and the schools are excellent. It is close to the coast and easy commute to the North side of San Diego Metro. There is a rail commuter station there which makes things easy to zip into San Diego for ball games and other recreation and avoid the traffic.

Angela, To properly answer your question we need to know your budget. The prices in the San Diego area have a vast range- and of course we need to know whether you have $250K or 2.5 million to spend to begin to answer. Some of the "excellent" schools may be a bit further inland to fit in certain budgets, etc.

We can answer you more specifically when we know the amount you think you might have to spend, whether you would like a detached only, or might consider attached and how many bedrooms you need.

I live in Coronado, located between the Ocean and San Diego Bay. I raised five children here and it is pricey but has great schools, including private ones. We are 10 minutes from downtown San Diego with it's shopping, theaters, restuarants etc. You can even go on a ferry to downtown and walk or take your bike. Coronado has a smalltown atmosphere and ambiance. Lots of people would love to live here. Plenty to do, but comparatively expensive, although it is a buyer's market. Hope that helps and if you go to http://www.sandicor.com/statistics you can see the average and median list and sold prices for the whole county. That might help you narrow your search.
