Helen, while you aren't required to have a lawyer in New York, it is customary. The builder has their legal department, and you are normally expected to have your own attorney review any documents pertaining to the purchase, if you so choose. Ask friends for referrals- while the builder may have a list, it's better to locate your own lawyer outside of a builder recommendation.
