Pamela, Home Buyer in New Jersey

how can I find data to compare real estate tax rates in areas West of Philadelphia?

Asked by Pamela, New Jersey Sat Nov 22, 2008

I am considering moving to a home in close commuting distance to Newtown Square. My kids will be out of high school, so schools are only a consideration in terms of retention of real estate value.

Hello Pamela,

Which area(s) West of Philadelphia were you looking at? There are 3 counties with many townships/boroughs and towns and they all do things very differently.

Please email me where you were interested in and I'd be happy to do the research for you!

Hi Pamela,

Your realtor has access to real estate tax information for virtually any home you would be interested in buying. I'm familiar with Newtown Square and surrounding areas, including Broomall, Havertown, Media and West Chester. If I can be of further service, please feel free to contact me anytime.

Each municipality maintains independent millages, i.e. tax rates, but the assessments are performed by the respective counties. The formula is millage times assessment to determine annual real estate taxes. Unfortunately, although the county websites may provide a list of millages for each municipality contained within, there is no way of providing trends or figures because the assessment is needed for the calculation. More importantly, assessments vary even though building characteristics are simlar.

You can search the townships website depending on the township and the county that you are interested in.

For example, Philadelphia would be: http://brtweb.phila.gov/

When you are ready to search the properties, you can use our site at http://www.thesomersteam.com .

Your next step would be to find a top notch buyers agent for the area that you are most interested in.
