Let me be the first to welcome you to Fort Lauderdale. If you haven't already taken care of the financing and are seeking a loan, I would recommend you contact RBC. Once you've decided your price range you would want to decide the area in Fort Lauderdale. Are you familiar with the area or neighborhood that you would like to live in? Would you prefer a condo or a single family residence? How soon would you like to move in?
The next step would be to have a real estate professional create a search for your desired property:
1. Price Range
2. Location - on the beach or close?
3. View of the ocean, interacoastal, waterfront?
4. Walking distance to beach, shopping, resturants?
5. Would this be an investment - do you want to rent it immediately after purchasing?
Please let me know if I can be of service!
Chane Realty Inc
There are good investments for homes and condos at this time. I sell both to my Canadian customers. If you want to just walk away at the end of your stay and have everything taken care of for you a condo is the way to go. If you buy a single family home you would just need to have some one take care of the property when you are away. Will you be coming down just for the winter? Do you want to rent it when you are not here? Do you have pets?
Please contact me directly and we can discuss your situation in detail.

Thank you for your inquiry. I am working with about 60% Canadian buyers right now and have sold many homes and condos to "Los Canadians". My office is by the beach and I specialize in all oceanfront, waterfront & neighbourhood homes in the Fort Lauderdale and surrounding areas. I would love to assist you in purchase a property and would just need to find out a few details so that we can narrow down your search. I can discuss mortgage options if you need it, and run through the whole buying process as buying real estate is quite different in Florida than you will find in Canada.
If you would like to contact me, I am sure you won't be disappointed. Thank you.

2) Find an agent (and there are plenty who speak French if you'd like that)
3) Find a house
4) Buy it.
The only issue with buying property in the United States are possible tax implications. Your agent can talk you through ways to minimize this.
